Fire!

This morning we hosted the local (State Center) volunteer fire crew for a controlled burn of two of the more rundown out-buildings on our property. They rolled up about 10 AM, convoy style and proceeded to take over our backyard, getting everything ready. They normally do practices and drills on Sunday morning, so this was just an extension of that, with the fire that Stew would start under their supervision as a sort of realtime training for the rookies. It was pretty cool. Far more elaborate that I’d imagined. I took over 100 pictures, but narrowed it down to 49 for the online album.

For the first 30 minutes after Stew lit the back hog house, it seemed like it wasn’t going to work at all. But then it finally caught on when more fuel and fodder was thrown on. While keeping the barn wet, to save it, they started the burn pile and the leaning building. Those went up pretty quickly. Now we have a lot of smoking junk.

They were gone by 12:30. We were all tired even though we were spectators.
