Farm Girl Flashback

I drove the tractor today after Stew gave me a review. I navigated a circle in 2nd, and then lowered the back plow to drag some dead weeds over to a pile. Then I put it in reverse for a bit and back into 2nd to lower the front loader and push my pile more into place. Whee.

This morning we did our usual Sam’s and HyVee errands in Ames. Wiley was pretty good in Sam’s, running off but coming back when we called him. He doesn’t like to hold your hand in the parking lot though. At HyVee we snagged a “truck cart” but he didn’t want to climb in to drive/ride so Stew carried him, but he ended up having a meltdown and had to be carried back to the car. Cyrus and I finished in there and back at the car Stew did the loading while I ran across the lot to JoAnn Fabrics. I picked up a size 7 steel crochet hook and 4 skeins of #10 crochet thread.

After my tractor lesson, back in the house with napping boys, using my new stuff, I finished another spiral pentagon, which as I’d hoped, ended up being approx. 1/4 the size of my first yarn attempt. I’m excited, thread crochet is pretty. It appears to be what my Great-Grandmother Miller did, as it looks similar to some of the pieces I got when Grandma Long brought some the last time we were all together. Intricate lace-y borders around starched linen circles for table tops, etc. as well as aprons and other domestic dainties. I’ve got a plan for mine that I hope to finish this week if I have time.

I’m broiling turkey burgers, mushrooms, and tomato halves w/ pesto on top for dinner. Wiley is eating green beans & meatballs in front of the Ice Age DVD while Stew reads a book, supervising. I’ve got formula and rice cereal ready for Cyrus but he is taking a cat nap on an afghan. He is 5 months today, but I haven’t taken any pictures to post yet.
